Whopper
The One that got Away!

This may not be funny to anyone but me and my son but here goes. As a single mom with an
absentee father, I had to try to teach my son 'man' things when I didn't even know how. When
my son was five years old, he begged me to take him fishing. I loved the idea but I didn't have
the vaguest idea how to pick out a pole, string, hooks, or bait, so I didn't get any. The next
morning I packed up a pic-nic and set out for the lake. I had hoped he would be satisfied with
playing in the water. Not hardly. I had to improvise and I didn't have much to work with. I had
some kite string in the back of the car. I looked around for a long slim stick. I cleaned it up a
bit and tied the string to one end, just long enough to reach the water with a few inches to
spare. I tied a rock (remember, I had no hook or bait) to the end of the string. My son sat on
the edge of the water and dipped the rock into the lake and waited patiently for about five
minutes. He pulled up his rock and glared at it. He looked at me and caught sight of a man
several yards away with a fish on the line. He looked down and said, "Something is wrong with
my pole! I don't want to fish any more!" He threw the pole down.
Several years later, I took him fishing again (with real equipment) and told him that story.
After about thirty minutes, he struggled to pull in a 30 pound carp. While I was jumping
around behind him, a fish stole the new rod and reel my father gave me that morning.
