Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce
Ingredients:
  • 1/2 loaf of french bread (4 cups)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup chopped pitted dates, raisins, or dried
    cranberries or cherries
  • 3 slightly beaten eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsps ground cinnamon (you can use ground cloves
    too)
  • Whiskey Sauce
  • 2 T bourbon
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg yolk (beaten)
  • 2 T water
  • Whiskey Sauce: In a small saucepan melt
    butter. Stir in egg yolk, and water. Cook
    about 5 minutes over medium-low heat or
    until the sugar dissolves and mixture
    thickens. Remove from heat and add bourbon.
    Makes about 2/3 cup sauce. Set aside.
Preheat oven at 350. Tear the French bread into small
pieces to equal 4 cups. Combine bread, milk, and dates
(your dried fruit of choice). Mix together eggs, sugar,
melted butter, vanilla, and cinnamon. Stir into bread
mixture and blend well. Turn into a greased square 8 x 8 x
2"baking dish. Bake at 350 for 40 to 50 minutes. Garnish
with fresh mint. Serve warm with Whiskey Sauce. Note:
This can be served with a fruit topping as well as the
Whiskey Sauce.

Makes 8 to 9 servings.
