Grandparent's Day is celebrated largely to the efforts of Mrs. Hermine Beckett Hanna in 1961. Mrs.
Hanna's goal was to educate everyone, but especially the young in the community at to the
important contributions senior citizens make. She began the "adopt a grandparent" movement.
Marion McQuade and Michael Goldgar are accredited with lobbying for national observance of
Grandparent's Day. President Jimmy Carter signed into law (Public Law 96-62) Grandparent's Day
on the first Sunday after Labor Day.
The statute states that we are"... to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to
show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information,
and guidance older people can offer." Nation Grandparent's Day was passed in 1978 and signed by
President Jimmy Carter.
Unfortunately, the holiday is not given the attention that is attributed to Mother's Day or Father's Day.
